Lithium batteries, also known as lithium-ion batteries, are rechargeable energy storage systems that power smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles. They work by moving positively charged lithium ions from one terminal to another through a liquid solution while the battery is charging (or discharging). The two poles of a lithium battery are called the cathode (which holds positive charges) and the anode (which holds negative charges).
When you plug in your device to charge it, whatever mechanism you used initiates a chemical reaction in the battery. It causes lithium ions to surge from the cathode toward the anode and become embedded there. When you use your device and drain its battery, it prompts these same lithium ions to head back toward their original home in the cathode. As they flow through the liquid solution between them, they generate electricity.
These batteries have higher energy densities than some of their predecessors; i.e., they can store more energy for their weight or size. They also last longer and lose less power when not being used.
